Default Query about this pigtail

Am I right that the black bit is just a protective cover and is removed for fitting of the propane pigtail associated with the link below?

Hi Ian. I you are referring to the black dome shaped rubber on the thumbwheel end, leave it on it is to seal the hand tight fitting on the L.H. thread on the orange propane bottle. The spanner hex fitting is all brass dome shape.
Hope that helps. Deanjay.

thanks, some pigtails don't have the black bit, that's what made me think it need removing.
How do I know which is correct? Black dome, had tightening, no black done spanner tightening? That would mean both are ok?

Hi again Ian. I changed my all brass fitting that had to be well spanner tight for the rubber dome when I fitted the lightweight ally bottle, it has a large red thumbwheel to hand tighten. I would think if yours has the rubber dome and the hex spanner end fit as tight as you can by hand and then nip it up with a spanner. don't over tighten it in case it damages the rubber, check for leaks, I use a couple of drops of washing up liquid in a mug full of warm water.

I don't have a propane pigtail only Butane and use the Blue calor gas bottles.
Having picked up red bottles so cheap from the car boot, I was going to get a pigtail to suit.
