You can read my recent threads if you like but a small number of people got quite upset at my findings.
Please read on about the importance of checking the tensioner pulley.

Hi Will. The difference between the belts is that the front one is a lot longer than the two rear ones! The most important item to test is the tensioner pulley for bearing wear. Mine had covered 90,000 miles (as specified by MG Rover) and was definitely in need of renewal.

As you have seen, your belts have not broken after 6 years as some people convince themselves will happen. In fact, the belts will be good for 90,000 miles regardless of the time taken to reach that mileage (as I have just proved on my own car). But you must make your own decision after considering both arguments.

Simon
Not everyone will be as fortunate, or indeed as penny pinching when it comes to servicing their car Simon.

Now neglecting your own car is one thing, but advising others they should follow suit is quite frankly stupid.

It's just as well you believe your own rhetoric though, as based upon the time it is taking you to carry out the belt change on your own car, the belts will be time expired once you box it back up

So is it running, or are you considering examining the minutiae of camshaft cover bolts, then running another thread, in order to spin the job out for another couple of months

What do they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, well that applies to those with little knowledge, and your advice is based on luck and speculative "engineering" practice and as such cannot be classed as sound advice, but rather bad advice

Keep up the good work, I'm running a book on the longest KV6 belt change in history

If you want cheap, contact Daniel blewitt on the rewmm Facebook group. He's based in Dudley I believe. I've not had any personal experience with him myself, but he is charging £250 to supply and fit belts to a V6.
That seems far too good to be true to me, however there are quite a few others on the FB group who have used him and recommend him highly.

Can someone advise on the difference between the belts but also what else to consider changing at the same time as the belts and waterpump while it is stripped down. And any recommenations on who to contact.

Thanks

At 8 years old I would change them, the gates kit comes with three belts a jockey wheel and the tensioner but not the hydraulic tensioner which I think is worth doing whilst in there. There’s lots of disagreements over change points but I would always side with the manufacturers recommendations, just my opinion based on 18 years working with MGR products

I have too agree with Brian on this 100% you can't expect your cam belts too last for a long period without breaking that's almost keeping your car alive with hopes and dreams well sorry in the real world of automotive engineering.

It doesn't work and can spill disaster for your car and your pockets.

My method if the manual says too change at 90,000 miles I'll change it well before at 60,000/70,000 miles too be sure as I don't want my car dead.
While the belts are being done saving you having too take apart again in the near future change everything while you there.
Water Pump.
Thermal stat.
Tensioners the lot.

Gives you reassurance for the future of ownership.

Simon just take note.

All sorts of things come into play where belts life are concerned, One is how much is the car used, 2 do you boot it higher revs can deteriote during hard drivering, 3 leaks is there any power steering fluid oil coolant etc going on the belts?

Had one customer who had a sever power steering leaking on the AC belts Advised him that could need replacing as there was a lot, this stuff penetrates rubber.

He said no and I thought fair enough, he never bortherd, few days later he calls me and he's broken down by plas menai, Went over too see and ta da the AC belt snapped.

His fist thing he said was fine beep it wasn't my cam belts, I asked when was it changed he said god knows.

Do you want me too book you in, straight away he said hell yes.

He didn't want too take the risk.

You've been lucky so far Simon you really have, But I wouldn't risk going over that interval at all its a bad move that can destroy a well and truly cherished motor.

I’ve been quoted by a local mg rover specialist £650 for the cambelts and water pump to be changed. This is a little out of my budget! Can anyone recommend a garage who will do a job but at a more reasonable price? I am located in Sussex but could travel within 100 miles or so

Hmmm......sounds ridiculously cheap to me & I think I'd be concerned as to what exactly was being replaced.

Just to add to the list of specialists being recommended, Lates also knows his onions when it comes to cambelts.
