To me, the SD1 has iconic styling.

I remember when I first saw one in the hot summer of '76.
How many 45 year old cars still look this good?

Another masterpiece from David Bache (his last one). The man behind the P5 and P6 amongst others.

Well I beg to differ when if comes to the question of last masterpiece, the Metro was his last project

The P6 was a far better car than the SD1, but someone has to love the mix of 70's militancy and build quality.

Hats off to Thomas, I hope this becomes his daily driver once he passes his test, it will certainly be a baptism of fire in terms of introduction to the outstanding reliability that was BL Cars in 1981 !!

I only owned one SD1 and that was a twin plenum Vitesse, that I bought in order to ploat the engine and gearbox to fit into a Sherpa van, the Sherpa was more comfortable, stylish and practical the the Rover.

Best of luck young 'un

Brian

P.S. in terms of styling, this actually works quite well too and predates the SD1

I do like the SD1’s, strangely enough I like the beige brown 70’s interiors in these but not many other cars

I've had two in my time, a BRG 2600 which my mate borrowed and melted the engine on the motorway and a gold Vanden Plas 3.5 V8 which I loved but spent more time pushing it to the petrol station than driving it. Always wanted to own a vitesse but it never happened.

My father ran 2 in succession, both V8s. He loved the first (a 1976) but never felt the second (a 1980) which he bought at 3 years old, was as fast, and is the one I still have. The second was replaced by a Jaguar Sovereign Series III 4.2, and once he got that in 1989 the Rover was consigned to a barn. He considered it a tin can compared to the Jag.

I started with a series 2 V8 Vanden Plas and although I loved the interior and colour I hated the carbs and automatic FASD choke. I quickly found and fitted a flat top efi system with twin lambdas that not only drastically improved performance/fuel economy but started first time, every time. I now had a car that could out perform most others yet with comparable fuel consumption. Sometime later, I got a Vitesse and then a twin plenum Vitesse.

I think the OP’s series one car looks very nice and if only welded twice then must be something of a record. I’ve got a series 1 bodyshell here that I’ve welded, and welded, and welded - the only part not welded is the roof, the boot floor resembles a patchwork quilt.

Good luck with your extremely rare car.

Very nice Thomas, I always fancied playing around and having different cars, but never got the chance. By the way have you considered what your insurance cost would be on such a big engined car and your age/driving experience?
