Default New air con pump?

I have exactly the same symptoms as posted below in 2007 on my R75 (though I don't understand Pondweed's response):

Presumably if it's not fixed the air con will eventually pack up? If a new pump is indeed the way to go then I've seen them on fleabay for c£100 but is this a major garage job with a corresponding bill to go with it

I do not know how the 1.8 is laid out at the front so can only comment on an oil burner.

With the bumper and front panel off there is enough room to get at the 2 a/c pipes that are connected to the pump. There is the need to remove the belt which might involve removing the wheel arch liner. The pump is held in by three bolts that fit upwards. Having done that the pump will fall out. Replacement is just the reverse.

What you should do is take the car to somwhere they do regassing and get them to evacuate the refrigerant and oil first.

If the whining is not too bad why not take your time looking for a pump - you might find a new one for about £100 and then do the swap.

Thanks for that MSB. Getting the pump isn't the prob - it's what sort of bill I may be looking at to get it replaced as this sort of work is out of my capability!

I went through this last year
you can get a pump from smc for about £75. to have the pump fitted by our local garage - completely - recovered, gas fit compressor and re-gas cost £350

unfortunately the compressor has failed again on the electrical clutch this time so here we go again

Blimey - £350!! I was wondering if these diy regas kits that have lubricant etc in them may ease things for the time being?

Is your air conditioning working? if it is then adding gas to it would overcharge the system causing failure. I have used these recharge cans before on air cons that were short on refrigderant with some effect. To replace the compressor involves removing front bumper, cross member and more before you get to the compressor. Our garage quoted 5 hours labour to complete the repair.

The air con is working but it ain't ice cold like the ZTT. How would I know if it's low in refridgerant?

If it too low on refridgerant then the system will not work. If there is too much it will not work. There is a valve that prevents the pump operating.

Five hours is a bit heavy.

If you have some sockets and some open-ended spanners then it is not complex to do.

There re some how tos on removing the front.

Do it yourself and it will only cost you £50 for the gassing.

If you want any more info on doing the job let me know.

Aircon servicing by KwikFit is often suggested 'cos they have a 'colder or your mony back' guarantee. Maybe the only good thing anyone has to say about 'em.
