Default Odometer, trip recorder, external temp. display tempamental

Hi

Can you help me with this one - Rover 75 CDT. The odometer / temp and the first bank of warning lights above it (eg handbrake warning light etc) fails to display unless the ignition key is turned quite slowly to the starting position. The top bank of warning lights (ABS etc) are not effected by the problem. Any ideas?? The ECU is dry. The car starts and runs just fine.

Thanks

Hi John and welcome to the forums,

there have been a few issues reported with lights on the display when the key has been turned to quickly but not heard that you have to turn the key slowly for it to work ok. Don't think there was a fix reported

Welcome along........Unusual one this.....you could try one of two things...

Try disconnecting the battery for 15 minuites or so (Sat Nav and radio codes etc...) (The time it takes to make and drink a cuppa is about right)

If that fails, then pop the instrument cluster out and unplug and reseat the two connectors.

Thanks for your advice. Tried to disconnect battery and also removed/checked plugs this morning - still no joy. Actually there is no display on the bottom section now. Not being familiar with the electrics of this model my thoughts are that if the handbrake warnight light is on of the items not displaying then it is unlikely to be anything to do with the ECU. Is there a chance it is something as basic as a fault within the actual display? I guess it's a trip to the Rover garage.

Thanks again
John

Thge only other obvious thing would be to check the plenum chamber for water.

Last check to make is pop another Instrument Pack in to see if there is any change. Post you location in your profile and there may be someone near by who can assist.

If it is the Display unit,
Contact Les at SMC Trading as he has them at very good Prices new.
It will need to be matched on a T4 so don't fit until arrival at garage that will do the T4 session.

The dash lights can be tested by internal diagnostics. Here's the "how to":

Test 2.0 is for the lights.

I would recheck my plugs on the back of the Instrument Pack, when i retro fitted the Traffic Master i never put the plugs in correctly and that gave me weird problems with the dash lights, sorry it was over 2 years ago and can't remember the exact faults.

Hi Thanks for your replies. I have checked the car and it looks like the fault is within the instrument cluster. I see that the new clusters for sale on Ebay (SMC) are for models with a computer centre, my 2000 CDT car is basic. Do you think this unit will function as a straight replacement without upgrading( I appreciate it will have to be installed by the dealer )

The IKP with the computer system requires the steering column stalk with the end button, which controls the functions. The whole kit can be fitted as an upgrade. As noted, only new IKPs can be installed and a T4 is essential.
