Default V6 odd overheat?

My 2001 45K mile 2.5V6 ( sort of) overheated today?
The gauge went to the red warning light, and when I took the expansion cap off the coolant bubbled out.Let it all cool down, drove the remaining 5 miles at normal speeds with the heater fan on hot and the gauge was rock steady at it's normal temp position.Checked again at home,no steam, and when I filled up with water it took very little( so it appears it's not losing water). However, over the last week or so, when what (appears to be) the fan has kicked in, the noise it has made has been more prominent than usual, Also( have no idea if it's related) the car has felt like it " could" be slightly down on power, when accelerating at lower revs, or it could be a reluctance to kickdown as perky as usual. My guess is maybe the fan isn't kicking in at the right temp, but I'll throw this one out to you!!!!

could be the lower speeds of the fan have failed
have you checked them? plenty of posts about it.

Best thing to do is enter the on board diagnostics setup and go to the remperature read out, it will give you accurate temps

O.K,fans are not coming on,with or without air-con,which may explain the fans being that much louder recently if they have given up the ghost.Am now going to check relays etc. Is there a common fault or place to start by process of elimination?

Do a search on fans, you will be up all night reading all the entries. Good luck. I would go for a kenlowe replacement from Jules personally.

Hi, seems same symptoms as mine experienced. Maybe it is the time to check the fan, and the thermostat. My way is:
- use the ipk to turn on coolant temp monitoring (item 19-off; then item 7-0)

Check the fan, for 2.5v6 (w/ aircon off):
1. Slow fan - 106 -112C
2. Mid fan - 112-118C
3. Fast fan - 118 above (max 127C)
(If the fan does not kick-in, the fan might have gone)

Check the thermostat
1. run idle the car till coolant reaches 96C
2. Touch the base of the radiator.
(If it is stone cold, the thermostat is ....gone)

p.s just a warm reminder....there are some branded new thermostat found faulty...they just does not open (or occasionally open) when reaching 82C.
They make the coolant boiled into streams, and escape from weakest links.
That's why there are mysterous coolant loss...but not necessary from a HGF.

Just 2 cents from a lot of pain....

My first post as the new owner of a 2003, 2.5 V6 Conoisseur, with 41,500 miles.

Enjoying the car very much but a few things need sorting out, which, while searching this brilliant forum, are common issues (bonnet open light comes on over 50mph, some rainwater dripping behind the front passenger side tyre - a blockage somewhere i am guessing).

I have also read how to use the on board computer and using test 7.0 i drove around observing the temperature readings. Normal temp while driving around town (not motorway) seems to be between 93C - 97C. While stopping at traffic light, temp will go over 100C and I can hear the fan switch on. Once I start to drive and the temp goes below 100C, the fan turns off.

While driving I did not have the AC on - as I have read it is normal for fan to be on when running AC.

As a novice (not mechanical at all) I think the car is running a bit too hot - even the interior of the car appears to be a bit on the warm side.

Also, when I go out of the car, I can smell near the grill a faint "hot smell" - if that makes sense. Not a burning smell, but I would rather there be no smell.

It appears to me that the radiator is new (or is certainly the cleanest one I have seen, as its completely "silver colour". )

Could someone please advise me what should normal temp readings be for the 2.5 V6?

If it is running hot - could this be due to a faulty thermostat? Or perhaps it needs new coolant? Or anything else?

Thanks very much.
