Default Airbag query

Hi all

Hope I'm posting this in the right forum, newbie here

I sent my 75 Tourer over the rainbow bridge a couple of weeks back, and removed a lot of bits myself to hopefully sell to co-owners on here before eBaying it all.

My query is, I couldn't at the time remove the steering wheel and asked the scrappy to do this for me. They have just messaged to say they couldn't remove the steering wheel and in attempting to do so, the airbag went off and has damaged the steering wheel beyond repair or removal. Do you think the airbag would have gone off having had no power source for well over 2 weeks, or are they spinning me a line

Many thanks

Hey there,

It's very unlikely to have gone off, maybe they attached another battery to it?

If it were to go off, then it would only damage the airbag unit and not the wheel itself.

I'm guessing that either they sold it to someone, or can't be bothered to find the correct long T30 (?) screwdriver required to remove it.

If I were you, I'd play devil's advocate and go and see the car in their yard. If the airbag had gone off, I'm *sure* they wouldn't have removed it from the car!

Talking Many thanks!!

Many thanks Tourist

That was my thoughts too, that the wheel wouldn't have been damaged

I think they're taking me for a fool lol, ever since they collected Ronnie, it's been radio silence from them, not answering emails etc

I think they're perhaps a tad miffed that I stripped the inside bare, just wish I could've got more bits from under the bonnet to help out fellow 75ers

Think I'll take a wander to the yard on my way home from work tomorrow, just for a curious nosey

Thanks again

So I've just called into the scrappys, and apparently Ronnie, my Tourer has been squished, steering wheel and all

But on a positive note, if anyone wants to borrow my shiny new T30 screwdriver I bought this morning, let me know

Look on the bright side - I'd put money on betting your steering wheel wasn't crushed and will be sold to a new owner.
Last one I scrapped I swapped the Rover wooden wheel for a black plastic one and sneaked an old steel rimmed tyre in the boot well that had been laying around the garage for years - Gawd knows what it came off. Had the rear powered blind and switch out, swapped the ECM for one with a knackered CAN bus (amazing how lumpy the autobox gets when it can't communicate with the engine) and various other bits and pieces.
