Blue NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-
Blue NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- are nesting in my garage (GG has seen them). Very cute they are too.
They fly in flat-out, through a hole in the mortar which is about the width of my thumb - an amazing piece of flying skill. On the exit phase, they can accelerate from nought to around 18mph in well under a second. I watched them over a two-hour period tonight (6pm to 8pm). One of the parents (can't tell Mum from Dad) makes a round trip for food every four minutes, even at the slowest average rate. That's 15 round-trips per hour. They start at 5am and carry on till 9pm without stopping. That makes 240 round trips every day at the very least. So, either they've got a whole army of babies in there – or just one monster chick (in which case, I think I'll run for the hills when it emerges from the nest). No chance of any pics - far too fast without some sort of photo-electic trigger device. |

There are currently herring gulls nesting in the chimney pots on next door's roof...and they make a right racket at times....(the gulls, not the neighbours!)

I have Starlings nesting in my loft at the moment. Like your blue NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- they have a very busy schedule and come and go frequently. Also, as you said, they are very hard to photograph.

We have house martins. At least this year they are on the side of the house at the apex. A couple of years ago they built on the back and as they leapt out they almost hit our heads before regaining height.
It seems they keep their nests very clean. When they want to dispose of certain substances, they stick their featherd bottoms backwards out of the nest, and deposit it below, making the path ratrher messy! |

At present there are 5 squirrels running around the garden, i think 3 are quite young due to their size and the fact they hurl themselves towards the magnolia tree and cling on. Plus when i walked down the garden the blue NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- that are in their nesting box were making a hell of a racket... must have been the rent invoice i sent them today. Ha ha

My dad had Swallows in his garage a few years ago - nesting on a nail in one of the horizontal wooden beams.
I could drive a car in at night with the headlights on and stop right underneath the nest without them panicking. During the night they would poo all over the car's bonnet, so we built a 'poo-catcher' (a small wooden tray) and hung it under the nest. They came back to the very same nail about three or four years running. How the hell do they do that without satnav? |
