You can guarantee that if anyone had died during the rescue someone, somewhere would have smelled the possibility of a claim against the MCA. Where it is possible for the MCA to demonstrate their man did everything according to accepted procedure then there is no problem. However, if it could be shown that procedure was not followed then there is hope of pinning something on them.

Again. Ask yourself what would have happened if someone had died and the MCA bod had not followed procedure? There is a good chance he could have been looking at defending a private prosecution from the dead girl's family. It's his fault because he didn't follow procedure.
Which again just proves why the world is such a stupid ridiculous place these days.

All your points taken, but in all honesty had it been me in that position and I had returned to get the equipment only to find the child had fallen to her death, I would be most upset. Equally if I were the one to fall, my family may have been a little distressed but known I had put my life on the line to save a child.
No contest.

I'm disgusted - what an utter disgrace.

This is yet another example of the "blame and claim" culture that we are living in at the moment.

People like that should be feted, not pilloried.

Yet something else that makes me completely sick of this country.

Common sense is not so common any more.

Life seems all about ticking boxes and getting useless accreditations nowadays, oh and living in fear of legal action.

If only it was that easy.

I spent 8 weeks doing "fast roads" training, and one thing they kept returning to was your own personal safety.

Whilst is actions saved the girls life, let me add a "What if..."

The crew of three had arrived at the scene with no equipment. The next step is he starts climbing down the cliff to help the girl and get's into difficulty. There are now 2 people to resue and only 2 rescuers with no equipment. All of a sudden the situation has got twice as bad, and potentially will get a lot worse unless additional resources arrive pronto.

Many years ago, there was a simialar incident, when a man was over come by fumes in a sewer. His partner rushed in to drag him out without first puting on his own BA. Samething happened to him.

The socking end result was that 4 men died because 3 of them tried to do the "right thing".

Yes he was brave, and yes he did save her life, but it's not that simple.....

Indeed. And that is why it needs a bit of wit and imagination on the part of managers to resolve these situations. People need to understand why procedures are there just as people need to appreciate what it is like to actually be in the situation and having to apply them. The situation had a happy outcome so there is no need to make such a pig's ear of the situation.

You also need to be a bit careful because we are only going on what has been reported. There is a possibility that the MCA did handle this with tact and diplomacy and the bloke was a complete goon. It is also possible that the parting was by agreement and amicable it's just the vicious MCA sacks brave hero makes a better story.

I know what I'd have my money on.
