Default Rover 75 gone bad

Hi guys,
haven't been on lately as I had to sell my 75 to my dad due to a company car - sob sob.

Anyway, he's had it a few months and suddenly it lost power so he had to pull in. He selected drive - wouldn't go. then reverse, it went. So he tried drive, yep it went, then reverse again - wouldn't go.

The garage thinks it's the gearbox but it's a sealed unit and can't get it open so will have to take it to a specialist.

He had problems with the 3rd plenum - i told him about the 2 on the left and right but didn't realise about the third plenum and he got a bit drenched in the passenger cockpit - and then the dredded gear clunk. I hope we have got to clear the 3rd plenum before it did any damage to the ecu.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?
Could it be the ECU, could it be low transmission fluid or something else.

I feel really bad I sold this wonderful car to my dad and he's got this big problem.

Cheers guys.

Ski.
