![]() Hi All,
I have a problem with my V6 sounding tappety until the engine warms up. I also have a V8 BMW and have just found that the BMW has a one way valve that holds oil at the top of the engine so that the hydraulic tappers has oil at startup. Question, does anyone know if the V6 Rover has something similar. I wonder if that may be the cause of my noise. I'd appreciate any feedback and pointing to where to look. Regards, Terry |

![]() Terry,
What's the oil change history of the car? It sounds as if it needs one, and a dose of Comma Flush Out too! ![]() Simon

![]() The hydraulic tappets need oil under pressure from the pump when the engine is running.
Sounds like the feed might be partially obstructed. As post above, try a couple of low mileage oil changes. This will often clear the problem as the diesel oil has detergents in the mix to keep the insides of the engine clean. |

![]() This is a replacement engine as my previous one seized on the M5. This engine has covered 75K miles, but I don't know the history. I've done a couple of oil flushes and oil / filter changes. They have helped but not cured the problem.
I just wondered if it could be anything else... |

![]() Hiya Bearhouse.
Be sure to use the correct grade oil for a 2.5 V6 (10/40 semi) You could use a 10/40 diesel oil as it has additives that help keep diesel engines cleaner inside. Be sure to prime the filter before you fit it as any shortage of oil pressure on start up may harm the bearings. I pull the fuel relay and crank the engine till the oil light goes out, then replace it. I have just gone through an engine change on my V6 and the problem started with just a "tapping" noise that never really went away. When I finally got the sump off, although the oil had been changed and flushed, it still had a lot of sludge present. The oil drain plug is quite restricted on this engine so a regular oil change is advisable to prevent the sludge from forming. If you have a look at the picture below you will see just how restricted the oil exit is on the V6 sump (its that 10mm gap in the corner). The sludge just can't get out. If you suspect you have low oil pressure, have it checked or check it yourself if you have the equipment. You should have 15 to 20psi on hot idle and at least 60psi at 3000rpm hot. Let's not get frightened though! It may be just have dirty oil-ways. Steve ![]() |

![]() If you are in any doubt as to what the noise is, get a few learned V6 people to have a look at it. Another opinion or three is a good thing I think.
Good luck with it. Steve |

![]() Another vote for running a diesel-grade oil here - I've done it with many of my past MG Rover vehicles, and it's always worked a treat in regards to pulling all manner of crud out of the engine.
![]() The oil was noticeably darker when diesel-grade oil was flushed out at 1,000 miles than the petrol-grade oil was when changed at 6,000 miles (1.6 K Series, back in the day). Tappets calmed down a lot, too.
