R75 Diesel running problems.
Hello everyone,
I have just bought a Rover 75 diesel that looks great but runs badly to replace my previous Rover 75 that looks awful but runs great! I need some advice to make it run right. 1.) It's hard to start. I thought this might be an injector problem, but I am unsure how to test this. 2.) The idle speed is erratic, so on stripdown, I have found a clogged EGR with a screw wedged in it! I have replaced this with a bypass kit that I had lying around, but the problem persists. 3.) I have a new PCV on order, since the old on is black with oil. I would not normally have checked this, but when I started the engine with the air filter housing removed, oil was ejecting from the mounting holes. That can't be right can it? 4.) The cooling fan does not appear to be working. It's a 2003 car, so I'm guessing 3 speed? How difficult would that be to fix? 5.) The gear linkages have been changed at some point, but I suspect not very well! How can this be adjusted? Other than that, the lower engine mount is shot and there's various other things to sort. That said, the car has huge potential to be really nice, so I don't mind putting the effort in. Any advice would be most welcome. |

I can't see any evidence of a tide mark around the ECU, so at least that might be OK!

Only a 'might', check the pollen filter next to it - does that look clean as if it has never suffered from water?

Looks in good order to me. Possibly the cabin filter has been changed relatively recently.

That 'might' indicate that it has possibly been flooded. The cabin air would really stink if the filter got a soaking. The ECU has a breather, which will allow water in and once it gets in, it does not easily find a way back out. Not saying it has happened, but you never know..

The more I delve, the more I find wrong! Someone has drilled holes in the intercooler to retain the plastic pipe. Everything is drenched in oil, so I suppose I'm going to need a replacement intercooler, along with the plastic pipe. I hoped just to replace the o-rings.
