Modern hard drives are pretty robust, but sometimes the electronics in the external caddy (case) aren't. A fault can easily stop the drive from spinning up, or being recognised. New cases are available quite cheaply on eBay etc.

I've had a couple of similar external hard drive failures after only a few months of use. In both instances I transferred the hard drives into new cases (a simple job), and both drives worked fine. All the data was still there, and they are still working.

It's worth a try, before going to the expense of data retrieval from a hard drive that may be actually OK.

Just a thought,
Jim

I agree, to an extent. However a fair few drives now have the USB socket soldered on to the controller board, so changing the caddy is sadly not possible on those.

If the value of the data for you is less than what you need to pay to recover it, skip it and accept your loss. It's a small loss anyway, because it's less than the modest amount you have to pay for using the software https://www.cleverfiles.com/hard-dri...-recovery.html .
If you don't mind expenses, check the Disk Drill app, but it's pretty pricey

Thanks for all the replies, my data was not recoverable so I am busy trying to reconstruct what I can but at least I now know where I am at.

1st please don't open up the hard drive, they're sealed and one spec of dust and it's a gone.

I know you said that it was unrecoverable, one thing I did to a hard drive that was unreadable was I used a SATA to USB cable and it reads the drive like a usb drive. Once I did this I started in safe mode and then the hard drive was readable, I managed to recover 80% of the contents, for the sake of £10 it's worth a go
