The Welsh Knot was apiece of wood hung around the necks of Children who spoke Welsh in the 19th Century.
It was given to any boy overheard speaking Welsh, and he would pass it to a different boy whom he overheard speaking Welsh. At the end of the day, the wearer would be given a lashing. It was used – in some schools only - to discourage pupils from speaking Welsh, at a time when English was considered by some to be the only suitable medium of education |

Thankyou John. That has helped immensely. Does it have any current significance other than perhaps as a symbol of (past? / present?) English oppression?
Edit: and Grey Ghost natch.. |

I believe there was another piece of equipment used to deter the use of the Welsh language at the time. Rather more sophisticated I think like a vice for the jaw and tongue.

Not now you would think but the Return of the Welsh Knot has been claimed by Staff at Thomas Cook who were ordered only to talk in English. They are currently being taken through the Courts by the Race Relations People, it may have been sorted now though as our local Branch speak in Welsh to those that like to do business in the language. |
