Default auto gearbox oil **now fixed**

hi,
i have been getting a whining noise under acceleration and light throttle and it sounds a bit like a belt whine. it descent do it stationary when revved so this to me eliminates belts. i had a good look and check over today and the only thing i could find was the gearbox oil was a very dark brown. i was expecting a shade of red! i don't know when it was last changed and it has now done 92000 miles. do you think a gearbox oil change will help? if so where would the best place be to get it?
thanks for any help in advance,

mark.

You need Jatco N402 ATF or an equivalent specification fluid. There are umpteen threads listing the suggested alternatives and where they can be bought.

Example: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=215964

HowTo: http://www.mediafire.com/view/xykqwq...ic_Gearbox.pdf

Plus local threads on the method.

A vital point is to locate the correct drain plug. Remove the wrong bolt and the gearbox will fall off - or something equally awkward.

changing it is quite straight forward take your time and follow the procedure carefully (including when you set the levels with the car running).

In terms of ATF the original designated MGR Jatco stuff is still available and the spec is important in particular for this box. There are others and I have used Carlube ATF U on all of mine although more recently they have taken direct reference to the Jatco spec off their packs.

Hi.
Carlube ATF-U is the most common compatible fluid. Available from GSF and Amazon. Get two full 4.55 litre containers and replace the lot. Don't delay the job is my advice.

well rain finally stopped, i have now changed the fluid for Carlube ATF-U, i did a full change including torque converter using the how to guide on here. i got 6.5 litres out and put 7 litres in. the oil that came out was a dark chocolate brown and luckily there was no swarf on the drain plug then checked fluid level when warmed up a bit. so much for rover service history as it looked like it had never been changed.i have had a good run in it today and it has totally changed the driving experience (for the better). the noise has gone (to my relief), and the gear change is so smooth. it wasn't harsh changes before but you knew it changed, now it is so smooth you only notice the revs drop when driving normally.

Thanks for the feedback Mark. It's good to hear that the correct fluid fixed it.

Great result Mark. Cars last longer when they are serviced correctly.
