Is it a constant speed noise or does it vary with engine speed?

you have the belts on that side for various functions plus the turbo itself is drivers side rear
Might be worth taking the wheel arch liner off which may help pinpoint the noise

air con can do this too if there is insufficient oil in the refrigerant circuit. Have you tried driving with the climate control in "econ" mode?

Thats a different turbo and a different engine. Its still an M47 series engine but its fitted with dual balancer shafts and a Garrett GT1749V turbo with variable vane technology, 150bhp out of the factory. The R75 has a mitsubishi turbo that does not sport VNT. This is why you can get 170bhp+ from nothing more than a remap on a 320D but about 15bhp less on an MG/Rover CDT. The upside is that the R75/ZT has much less of a reputation for eating turbos, a trait that is more common on 320d's than BMW would like to admit.

possibly a split in one of the boost hoses then. Check the hose from the turbo to the intercooler and the one from the intercooler to the EGR valve. If there's a small split, it can cause a whooshing, wistling or whining noise.

The mitsubishi industries turbo fitted to our cars is one of the most reliable turbos around. Its not unthinkable but its highly unlikely to be a turbo problem. How many miles has the car covered, what oil are you using and how often does the oil get changed?

Like I said, I wouldn't be too concerned about turbo probs although you can never be 100% certain. The engine will be just about run in at that mileage. Check the hoses I mentioned and also the tension of the auxiliary drive belt.
