Default Ceased to make progress

Well for the first time in 17 years my 75 ceased to make progress along the road.
It started with a slight loss of power, Then a complete loss, Started again after a bit of a struggle and the the same loss of power when driving no power and would not go over 3 thousand revs when stationary.

Fortunately I was only a short distance from home.

Opening the bonnet with the ignition on the UBP was making all sorts of strange noises,, I disconnected the pipe to the filter and there still a reasonable flow, No froth or bubbles..

I had a spare "Old" pump which I fitted and every thing returned to normal.

Dont know if it is the Placebo effect but the car seems to run a lot smoother and is more responsive

The pump was the original one so 21 years and 230 K it hadn't done bad.

Question

Just curious as I'm not a diesel owner so forgive my ignorance, but if the UBP fails would a good ITP not be sufficient on its own to keep the engine running?

No it wont, But if the Intank pump fails the UBP will keep the engine running providing you keep the tank over a 1/4 full.

That is interesting. Could it be then the job of the ITP is merely to pump fuel from one side of the saddle tank to the other and from which the UBP maybe pulls fuel from. Hmm?

Yes that is what I believe the purpose of the in tank pump and also to help the UBP with the supply of fuel

This thread might help shed some light on the functionality of the fuel system: https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...d.php?t=108535

Nope - the pick up for the ITP and the return line are both on the same side of the tank. The system was designed to give the correct LP fuel pressure using both pumps The ITP also provides quick self bleeding if you completely run out of fuel.
The Freelander 1 TD4 doesn't have a saddle tank, but it still uses an ITP.

Same track rod ends on the diesel also. Had to change the ones on the 2.5 Connie at around 109,000 miles.
