Volkswagen Phaeton

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Phaeton as a replacement for the 75 when she dies?

I've driven the mid range 4.2 V8

petrol and the 3L V6 oil burner and I have to say they really do have something that I cannot pinpoint.

Both are quicker then my 75 by some degree and luxury wise they are streets ahead.

Comfort is ahead and the level of calmness i experienced when driving one makes me really think this is the way to go.

With low mileage 2003 cars being had for < £7k they seem to be a steel.

Anyone had any experience of the mechanics of these?

I hate to get away from british but at the end of the day that boat has sailed.

Don't know much about this car,never really looked at one in depth

A fairly rare vehicle that is not seen regularly on roads or parked in car parks

Obviously it would have decent build quality and the power units would be refined,wonder what the price and availability of parts would be and main dealer service costs

Thats one of the reasons I first looked into them. That and the massage seats..

Rare and not to shabby looking but also not to out there with styling. comfort and anonimity.

If I owned a petrol station I'd go for the 5L V10 diesel. The problem is it only does 25mph

but the 550+ ftlb of torque makes up for it..

I always rather liked the Phaeton, so long as you are not a badge snob it is a fantastic car. The chassis underpins the Bentley Continental after all.

Whilst the forum is nowhere near as active as ours it may help in the decision process.

Some of the engineering in the Phaeton was ludicrously complicated from the reviews I read when launched. I understand it can be a fantastic car, but a major moneypit if something big goes wrong.

the phaeton is like the 75 and zt, one of the most underated cars ever built. Sharing a chassis and lot of running gear with a bentley continental gt is no mean feat- so that should tell you all you need to know. I was once in a w12 version and it blew me away. Looking about you get so much for your money and i would have one in a heart beat, and having a discussion with my collegues about this the other day, they all agreed.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Pheaton, fantastic used buy and Bentley quality. Do be aware that parts and servicing costs are very high though, you can use a good independent or DIY if thats your thing to save on the labour, but you can't get away from the parts cost.

As a driving experience, it's very similar to the Audi A8, (also a superb used buy) similar spec. engined A8's are more economical as they are much lighter (all aluminium) vs the Pheaton (all steel)

Hmmm not exactly cheap are they. What with that, the low mpg, and the cost of spares it wont make my list of possible successors to the 75..

I think the best -comparable replacements for our cars are either the Peugeot 406 diesel, or the Skoda diesel..

When my Dad did some customs auditing a couple of years ago at a well known luxury Franchise dealership chain he was told by the salesmen that the VW Phaeton is one of the best cars money can buy today! It's over engineered, and depreciates like a stone because of the badge on the front. They say the proof of the pudding is in the eating, well all of the chains executives drove Phaetons.

If you want to be impressed, do a google search on "VW Phaeton Factory" and have a look at the results, they are built in a glass walled factory with polished wooden floors!!

Makes longbridge look a bit shabby!:
