Roof box or bag?
Hello. For the first time, I may not have enough room in the ZT-T - two children now adult plus daughter's dog. I've no experience at all of having anything on the roof.
I'd thought I'd need a box but googling there seem to be some well reviewed bags that would be cheaper and more flexible. I don't imagine I'm going to need it that often. I wondered what people thought especially any experience with bags. Many thanks.

I have a roof box. A big one!. Never used it before so can comment on driving with it on but its a pain to store so maybe the bag type is best for storing at least.

With roof boxes, you get what you pay for. The cheaper ones can break or leak. The better quality ones tend to be streamlined, aerodynamic and importantly, keep your stuff dry. I have no experience with those bags but they do not look secure to me. Personally, for what you would have to pay, I would just buy a tourer! Dogs or large children would not do well in a bag or a roof box!

My roofbox has had a tough life, lots of scratches etc but I intend to get it repainted etc. Probably cost more to paint than a new roofbox!

I have this Kamei roof box to go on the Omega Estate.
https://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rb...~cC4ure%60iXE4 It's expensive but is a quality product through and through. You really do get what you pay for. |

I've got a roof box, we use it for camping etc when we cant get everything (and the dog) in the car.
Biggest drawback for me is storage of the thing when its off the car, it usually ends up behind the shed then I have to spend half an hour cleaning it before we go away. The bags would probably solve some of that problem, I presume they'll fold down flatter? Can you just leave them on the roof empty when not in use? Ultimately it depends what your going to be carrying, and for what distance.

I had the genuine Rover 580L Spacebox and it was fab.sure you lose a little economy but you expect to. Only in very heavy wind did you notice it was on.
The gloss black Exodus ones are slick looking and pretty sleek. They’re made by Mont Blanc |

Oops! Needs to flog off a couple of kids then! When my kids got larger they never wanted to go out as a family anyway. We were not cool enough.

I use one of the above and its given me great service. Little or no wind noise ( position it central both front and back) and whilst I must be getting poorer MPG - I truly haven't noticed. The one I use is fairly wide and streamlined and lockable from both sides which enables it to be loaded therefrom. The locking system actually locks in 3 positions - front, middle and back (each side)
When purchased, it arrived in a strong cardboard box in which I use currently to store it. Box stands upright just inside the garage, locate a strip of cardboard on the bottom with and extra two feet folded up against the r/box. Upon removal, drop the flap down and you can slid the R/box out. Rosemary and I carry it and locate it on the car roof. I take some time locating and I don't want it to act like a 'sail' I note there's an excellent box on eaby at £51.00 which is a snip. You'd need to establish if it's big enough for you requirements. Cheers and good luck. John |
