Default electric thing

Hi everybody. I was cleaning up the rear subframe when i found an electric box with a moving arm connected to the suspention arm. It apears that it must give a reading of suspention movement or something. anyway do you guys know what it does.
I removed this unit to clean around it and paint the bracket.
When i needed to put it back,i found that the aluminium threads had dissolved to the extent that it would not go back on.
Not knowing what the unit does was a panic that will the car still work ok without it in the panic i managed to fix it up with drilling it and using self tapping screws in to the plastic.
Car is still new to me so not convrt with it all yet.

Gra.
