Heard of this happening a few times.
The switch can be moved to the console above the cup holder so the dog can't stand on it and lock the car.

simple precautions maybe as I learned long ago, never leave keys in car with young kids or animals, they either get out and lock all the doors, or in this case tread on the button with the same result = as in petrol station, take the keys with you every time!

If I get out if the car in similar circumstances, I always leave the drivers door latched but not shut. The locking system will not operate when like this.

Simple fix, take the two keys with you, on separate keyrings, in different pockets. If you locked yourself out, take the other key out of the other pocket!

Just as a quick aside, if you leave your keys in your ignition and an opportunist thief jumps in your car and drives it away, most Insurance Companies will refuse to pay out, as you've "made insufficient precautions to prevent theft" and will refuse to pay out, so if you leave the car (no matter for how long) take the keys with you!

Would have been even worse luck if an opportunist thief had jumped in and driven it away!

Happened last year here, guy just checking tyre pressures he said on a main road filling station, opportunist passed by, jumped in and drove off, driver tried to prevent theft, left injured and left car less with no insurance cover!
