Default Esso

Whilst fueling up on Friday to come home I fueled up at an Esso station with their Unleaded Synergy fuel. Full to the brim,I clocked 198 miles from Wallingford (near Oxford) to Preston Lancs. and I only used just over 1/4 tank... done that trip quite a few times and I always use about 1/2 tank... drove the same steady 70 mph, got slowed down in M6 roadworks but that always happens at least till 2022 when the roadworks finish. So in relation to a previous thread I really wonder if branded fuel is better......

Do you normally fill it to the brim?

What I find with mine is that when I fill to the brim it takes about 80 miles before the needle even moves...

Typically fill it in Aberdeen, and the needle only hits the Full mark after Dundee.

No I don't, was on xmas holiday visiting family down south, had just under half tank, and as I was about to negotiate A34/M40/M42/M6 and all the roadworks and Friday traffic I put £50 in tank and petrol nozzle clicked once.

Blimey, that my local petrol station. Not cheap :¬)

Unless its 5 litres for the lawnmower, I prefer to use the Sainsbury's at Heyford Hill but if its that good perhaps I should give it a go.

Brim to brim is the proper test, obviously using the gauge is inaccurate

The only way to do this accurately is a brim to brim test over a number of tankfuls.

I keep a spreadsheet which gives the MPG for each tankful and the long-term average. Currently that is 68k miles for the CDT (manual) and the MPG is 47.x MPG.

A few years ago I did a comparison in my petrol Omega driving at night over long distances under identical conditions for the same journeys. Shell V Power gave about 6MPG better than ordinary fuel.

These days I only use Shell - either ordinary or V-Power and add 75mm of Millers Eco Power to each tank in the diesel. All I can say is that I have never felt the need to get a remap.

You could also calibrate the OBD system using your brim-brim calculation. You'd then get an MPG readout on the dash as accurate as the manual method. Once done, it shouldn't need touching again unless there's a significant change in your driving conditions.

Plain and simple. In 1991 I was made redundant and had to travel from Cove try to Reditch where I found a job. It was approx 27 miles each way and I used to put £5 in each day in my 1985 1.6 cavalier. I never had any money so always lived on the red bit of the fuel gauge! I always used Murco petrol and got 1/4 of a tank but if used Esso down the road the gauge only showed 1/3 of a tank. End of the day the gauge red the same.
A bit like Sainsbury’s Vodka and Smernoff you drink 1/2 bottle of the cheaper brand and you are drunk but drink the Smernoff you have drunk less.
I’m going on experience so ignore me lol!
