Rear hub nut stuck on - help, ideas please
The offside rear hub nut came off relatively easily but the nearside won't budge at all. I've tried these to no effect:
- Plusgas and a 450mm breaker bar - A blowgun and a 450mm breaker bar I've got the trailing arm/hub raised slightly with a jack to stop the whole caboodle moving downwards when force is applied to the breaker bar. I can't think what to try next. https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-CDU1534 |

Have you done your best to unstake it first? Normally they should be staked once torqued up. The thin flange at the top is centrepunched into the hub stem thread. Work an engineering screwdriver into the gap and open it back out.
This shouldn't be corroded or rusty in there so I doubt plusgas would be much help. The other thing you can try is some heat - but you'll need a good blow torch to heat up a nut that size. Easiest way to remove is to use a torque (rattle) gun if you have one. Mains powered ones are much cheaper than battery ones btw.

Yes, I unstaked it - I think the punched-in section is clear now. Perhaps I've gone too far the other way (?)
I've already heated it with a good blowgun - there's not much clearance round the edge though so it's hard to get the heat just onto the nut, it hits the shaft as well. I've got a battery impact wrench (this one) but I don't have an impact socket to fit the nut (it'll wreck a normal socket). |

I don't want to round the flats on the nut - cos then I'm really stuffed.

Bit late to be saying this but most hire shops stock impact drivers. Much more powerful than a battery one costing £50 and will only cost around £10 for a day including the 120V transformer.

I'd need the car to get to the nearest hire shop.
