SRS 15 years service
Hi - the user manual references 'some items will need to be replaced by the dealer' when the car is 15 years old.
What are these items, and do they actually need to be done? (Assuming they're still available anyway). John |

Hi John,
It's recently been announced that renewing SRS components after a fixed period of time is no longer believed to be necessary. It was said to be a precautionary measure since the industry had no long term experience of how reliable airbags would be. I thought they could have asked the Americans but maybe I'm mistaken. Simon

I have a feeling that replacing all 4 or 6 airbags would cost more than most of our cars are worth.
Is there any guidance from manufacturers still in existence re their 15 plus years old vehicles? |

I am sure I saw this covered awhile ago by one of the motoring shows. Not sure if it was Fifth Gear, Top Gear whatever. They used an old Rover to test if they would go off using a stunt man and they did.

As stated, the 15 year replacement is no longer considered necessary. Rather pointless exercise anyway, even if you could source new (unfitted) airbags they would be of a similar age.
After a lot of digging I managed to find this: Last edited by stevestrat; 8th September 2019 at 08:47.. |

The firing circuits are monitored by the SRS system, if the explosive element is still contained and dry, it should work.

They can't be tested, they can't be renewed. The simple truth is you'll never know until you need them.
