Default using instant gasket on an oil seal

I'm about to change the offside driveshaft oil seal on my cdt for the "second" time. No idea why it's leaking again.
Would it be acceptable to put a but in "instant gasket" on the outside of the oil seal where it comes into contact with the casing?
The bearing / shaft turns in the middle of the seal so wont out any there

thanks

Don't think I would.

I would have a good shufty at the seal and face once it is taken off to see if you can see any defects etc.

Did you buy new seals? If I remember rightly there are 2 different size oil seals for the box. Or at least 2 separate part numbers. Are you sure they are the right way around?

pretty sure I have the right side. now I have the seal out and read the Haynes manual, I agree no instant gasket. There looks to be an oil way a few millimetres inside the casing, the seal should not cover this but the Haynes manual says out surface is waxed and should not be oiled

I have checked the drive shaft but it is had to tell if there is a problem.
It looks as if there is some pitting but this seems to be between the oil seal and the metal plate that is part of the drive shaft and not within the seal area, I cant see any issues with the casing where the seal sits.

I'm going to take 30 seconds then back to the garage to fit new seal

As Dave says Ian, worth checking for any damage to the casing, but it certainly won't do any harm using a bit of instant gasket.

If you find any damage then I'd be more inclined to use it to fill the void - not unknown for Mr Previous Owner to use a sharp implement to remove the old seal and scratch the casing.

The last one I did went in quite easily tapped in with the help of a suitably sized socket and hammer.

cant see damage to casing. Seal is in and I have checked and double checked that it is in square. Looked around it with a mirror and it seems ok.
I feel I should oil the drive shaft bush/bearing where it sits in the seal but there looks to be "grease" in the seal and so am unsure. Normally I'd oil the bush

The bearing inboard of the seal will get lubricated once you refill the gearbox.

I usually put a smear of oil or grease on the shaft before offering it up so the seal doesn't pick up.

Sorry, driving LHD too long and got brain fade. Which one is it again? Is it the long drive shaft or the shorter? I only ask as I had more difficulty re fitting the long shaft. I had to be quite positive with regards to getting it home. This was also the side where I had a slight weep from the seal and was fixed by some judicious tapping to set the seal in.

God that reads terribly. I'm really not as hamfisted as that sounds.
