Default Oil cooler problems.

Struggling to remove an early type oil cooler from a V6 (see my other post), but read that the oil cooler was only fitted to models with air con. It seems I may have to remove the air con compressor to get the oil cooler out, so what if I don't replace either? Is there a shorter auxillary belt used when the compressor is absent, or is there another idler used in place of the compressor?

Re the removal of the cooler, would really like some first hand comments from someone who has done this; a reminder it's the early type, not the one shown in Haynes which is apparently smaller.
