I reckon fitting just the bearing is far easier than replacing the entire tensioner. Haven't heard of the tensioner itself failing on these diesels.

Did a 30 mile trip on Monday A roads up to 60mph. Still some slight noises when manoeuvring, which seems to disappear af speed increases, air con makes no difference.

Got the tensioner yesterday.
From what I can tell the spring part must be in mounting of the engine block. So is there any need to replace the tensioner as it is? Or instead strip it down and install the new pulley on the old arm?
As Arctic said ther engine will need lowering a bit more to get the tensioner to clear the chassis, and the nut will also need to be found (which i'm guessing is somewhere behind the alternator?).

Hopefully if it stays dry I'll make a start this afternoon.

Hi Andy.
I would say just swap over the wheel, the arm nut is in the centre of the tensioner and hard to get to, it's below the HPFP and in between the oil cooler, oil pot, at the bottom of the engine these photo may help with the location only.
1

tensioner marked with the tick, and the nut for the arm by two dots.
2

3

So looks to be above the compressor as well, which makes it even harder.
4

5

When removing the wheel look out for the washer so you don't lose it.
6

7

Washer on the front of the bolt too.
8

How it looks with the wheel removed.
9

10

good luck.

Thanks Steve. Edit to add your photos are about 10 x better than as Haynes.

Makes more sense now, I didn't realise what there is on the other end of it.

New tensioner pulley here, and technically i suppose it's just a pulley and an arm, not a tensioner!

It's got all the washers etc so I'll swap all the bits onto the old arm.
Hopefully....

Just got the alternator back out.

The 8mm arm nut on the tensioner was barely more than finger tight, not sure if that would affect it?

Jiggling it around note to see what's the easiest to replace.

Hi Andy.
A lot of graft for such a little but essential part that as to be correct, couple of links below for the actual tensioner, other places may sell it as well.

Sounds like the bearings in the wheel have had better days, all these moving parts will have to be changed sooner or later, something we will have to do

Are those wheels the same size as the new one looks to be a little smaller in the photo? could be an optical illusion.

Yes a lot of effort!, wish I never put it back together on Sunday!

Optical illusion, the lens of my phone is directly above the old wheel. They are identical apart from the new bearings being Slovakian not German.

I fitted the new pulley wheel on the old arm, and tightened it all up.
Despite my best efforts I still can't get the tensioner to release looks like that's the next thing to change...

Default Oh no!

Not sure this was meant to happen.

Ordered a new tensioner and idler pulley this morning from local shop, Mrs Andy is off now to collect them. Meanwhile whilst trying to remove the arm with some leverage, the NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- thing has snapped
Going to be a struggle to get this out....
Can't swing a hammer in there!
