I think all that people are interested in is a pass or a fail and any of these advisories can just be mentioned when the cert is handed over. Just as it used to be, where you can ignore them without having it written down
The problem with advises is that people weren't being told. A car could pass an mot and only just be road worthy with lots of advises and the buyer thought they had a car that was exceptionally good when it may not have been. If you bought a car from a dealer it's unlikely they would say about advises if they sold the car with a warranty. This way there is no hiding from the real condition. Many people ignore advises and just repair items when they fail as most drivers use their car with no attachment to it

I am not convinced that can even be seen for an mot.

The tester seems anal to me, I wouldn't worry about any of it.

You cannot buy an old car and not expect to have to replace some parts. If in doubt, have another mot done at your preferred garage.

In my opinion to say this has been a 'neglected' car is a bit unfair.

As you say it's been owned by a woman who's knowledge of motor cars could well be limited, and I'm not being derogatory to women, I've known a few chaps that don't even know how to open their bonnet!!!

She has relied on the garage to maintain her car, and we all know what some of these rascals can be like...?? "Oh it's just her again - hasn't got a clue" scenario.

These cars always attract the brake pipe and reg light advisories/fails. I would be more concerned that there is some sort of Service History with the car - which there should be as it's a 'one-owner'.

But to single out that she has neglected the car is a bit unfair, not to mention presumptuous.

Have you seen the car? If not, I would recommend you do before taking into consideration the MOT History!

MOT testers seem to be very variable in their assessments, I had an advisory on "slight play in steering rack", I have never done anything about it and it has never been mentioned by any MOT tester since (it was 5 years ago). I have also had an advisory of (this is a quote not my misspelling) "unable to check rear spring due to there locashun" - so I would take most advisories with a pinch of salt, some testers seem to think that they MUST put something in the box.

I would be more worried by an actual fail.

My view on the MOT history is that it gives the appearance of a car that is in used and usable condition but not one that has been loved/cherished. That is going to be the case with the majority of 10-year old cars being sold at average market prices.

With reference to the rear damper, having just looked at one in the garage, I can only assume the tester is commenting on the rubber "half-doughnut" that is bonded at the top of the damper mount. If so,the tester was indeed thorough but rightly so if he deteced play at the top of the shock absorber. Nevertheless a complete rear damper assembly is less than £70 so about the cost of a tank full of fuel.

Different people have varying attitudes to the purpose of an MOT. I for one always want the tester to record anything and everything that he wishes to advise me on so that I can take even greater pleasure and pride in being able to demonstrate how I maintain my cars by addressing all advisories etc at first appearance. At the other extreme are those who see it merely as a piece of paper to keep the car on the road irrespective of its acutal condition. There is a whole spectrum of individuals between these extremes.

That history would not put most people off buying the car.

Photos added showing the location of bonding.

How did you get all that info? Did you have the vin number? All I could get was whether it was taxed and MOT'd.
