Default Parking Sensors

I purchased a genuine Rover parking sensor kit off ebay off a well-known mg rover parts supplier (xjrover). In the kit it basically says to give it power just connect it to two wires for the rear lights. I have done this and it doesn’t sense anything when reversing all it does is when you put it into reverse the buzzer sounds for a few seconds and that’s it. The kit didn’t come with the sensors but they were already in my bumper. So I was advised that because I was fitting brand new old stock kit to get new sensors, so I did. Fitted them and the buzzing stops when you put it in reverse but nothing when moving close to anything so decided to put the old ones back in and they made the buzzing noise again when putting the car into reverse but nothing else. What could be the issue? I wouldn’t the needs telling they are there as all its doing is piggy backing off some wires as it’s a self-contained kit the dealer would have fitted. The links for the kit and sensors below.

Firstly test all the sensors - the buzzing sound means one of the sensors has failed - put the car into reverse gear with key at position 1 and put your ear to each sensor in turn - if they are making a clicking/buzzing sound they are working - if the sensor is silent then the sensor has failed. If the sensors are fine then look at the loom between the sensors and the parking ECU - especially where they come together in a connector (black i recall) - i had similar symptoms to you and it was a shorted connection at that point. If all looks okay then check the connection to the parking box itself -are the pins all OK. If all looks fine it could be the parking ECU itself.

Thank you i will check. I would be really supprised if the parking ECU is not right as it was a nos unused kit.

what wires did you use from the rear lights? I cant believe this "In the kit it basically says to give it power just connect it to two wires for the rear lights" is right. I would have thought one wire would be from the reversing lights, don't know about the other, perhaps an earth?

Yup.

Oh for God's sake - the forum won't let me post that because it's too short. Any more text is redundant, but - sigh - yes that's right, one wire from the reversing light, one earthed.

That OK, Thought Police?

In the kit the wires that you have to connect to the car are green/brown and black. it basically say to connect these to the corisponding colours in the car.
