How far would you travel to work?
I've recently been offered the chance to work for Jaguar Land Rover
The problem is that it is an hour and a half drive each way from where I live. I'm not in a position to up sticks and move there at the moment. What are your thoughts? How far do you travel?

When I was working, I imposed a limit of 70 miles each way, any further and I would book into a B&B....

I'm lucky, and only live around 2 miles from work. A long drive is less than ideal, however a job offer like that is hard to refuse. Nice one.

I'm a 60 mile round trip, but it's a relatively easy commute at about 40 mins each way.
The things you have to ask yourself is: "How much do I really want the job?" I suspect from the fact that you posted the question, the answer is quite a lot!! So, if you can't move at the moment (but would in the medium to longer term) then you have to look at how best you can get to the new job and the costs. A 1 & 1/2 hr drive is quite a commute but if is only for 3 months you could probably handle it. 6 months, maybe a bit more of an issue. Options? Stay 4 nights in a Premier Inn/Travelodge (if you can find the cheap rooms) and travel on a Monday and Friday. Weigh this up with the cost of fuel and the hassle of the 3 hr commute versus the family situation. Only you know what that balance will be. Perhaps commute some weeks, hotel the others (or a B & B if you can find one). If the job is really what you want I'm sure you will find a way in the short term to deal with the situation. Good luck in whatever you decide. Derek

I used to work in Staples Corner, north London, travelling from Farnborough. Usually about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, except at times like Fridays before a bank holiday when you could easily add an hour to the journey. Long term its a killer, did it for 4 years and then looked for something closer. You will not be wanting to do that sort of journey in your 1.8. Look for a small diesel. I had a 1.6 Golf. Bought it with around 50k on the clock and added another 150k to it. Past it on to another member of my family who put another 50k on it. Great car despite not having power steering.
Now work so close that I could walk to work if I wasn't so lazy

max 1 hour each way, and that would have to be either amazing pay or a job I really wanted!

Too far I fear,
I had to take a job just outside Chelmsford whilst living close to Norwich. 78 miles and near on 2 hours each way. Was a killer both to my car and my marriage, suffered it for almost 3 years, young family as well with all the demands on your time when you get home. Turned me grey as well as other issues, Would not do it again, personally, Being do-able is down a lot to your family set up and there acceptance of it. Sorry cannot be more positive |

I had a similar thing happen to me, I applied for a job at a subaru dealership not thinking I would even get a interview which I did, it was 45miles 1hr away and said to myself it wasn't to far away, I went in for a trial shift which ended up being a 2 day thing.
When I sat down and worked out my mileage a year it was 20,000 miles a year and with cost of fuel and maintenance on the car I had to turn down the job as it worked out I would be on more money yes, but take out traveling costs and maintenance on car and time traveling I was worst off and out the house for longer then I am now. |
