Default PSU or GFX card?

My PC has been playing up recently, not booting properly and shutting itself off on occasion. It's now completely stopped booting.
The fans start up but i don't get the usual BEEP, then it resets and tries again. On the third time it will seem to boot but it's not displayins anything on-screen (monitor in sleep mode).

If I unplug the external gfx card it will boot normally using the on-board card. If i leave the external card in and unplug everything non essential (cd drives/network cards etc) it still doesn't boot.

This seems to point to the gfx card having died but it can't help think it might be down to the psu not giving it enough juice, does this sound plausible?

what card is it? what PSU do you have?

Be mindful that GFX cards run very hot indeed and the heat we have atm may be causing some issues

i don't think the heat is the problem as this was starting up first thing in the morning from cold :s

As for the psu and gfx card i have no idea what they are. All i know is the card is an ATi dvi-d model, the psu is what came in the case (dell built system) around 5 years ago. I haven't been into PC building for years so couldn't even tell what type of card it is at a glance lol

Highly unlikely to be the PSU if the system boots as-normal with the GFX card disabled. Are you able to boot into Safe Mode?

the gfx card has to be physically removed from the system unit for it to boot first time. It will boot with it in there after 3 attempts although i didn't check as to how far it got in the boot sequence

The fact it boots at all with the "suspect" GFX card means it's almost definitely the GFX card, not the PSU at fault. See if you can make it to Safe Mode with the suspect GFX card connected.

good point about it still booting, i assume it eventually just ignores the gfx card and defaults to the on-board one instead (especially as it doesn't beep)

never had a gfx card just die like that one before, had ones with intermittent display issues and then die but never had the card completely die without warning
