My '04 car has had mud flaps fitted all its life and having just removed them for sill and respray work, I can confirm that they do damage the paintwork on the lower portions of the wings. My wings are still perfectly serviceable (just some minor paint chipping) but the mud flaps won't be going back on - even if it's only to prevent that really annoying scraping sound every time you hit a bump/hump in the road!
