I have just phoned up the dealer and i asked about the cambelts and if they have been changed he said i dont know. i said its a big job as its 3 belts and he said they were good for 100,000 miles or 10 years also they only cost £250-£300 to do. i said that seema to cheep and he just laughed and said well i dont know who told you it costs more.
Doesnt instill confidence but i would be buying the car not the people in the garage.

Hmm sounds like your typical cowboy trader lol! That said, at this price & age, I kind of take it as a given that the belts will need doing. On the face of it, seems like a rare & nice car. Shame I haven't the room for it, & if he's had it so long, could be worth going in with a strong offer (but in my experience, its a tough job doing a decent deal with this kind of trader).

I went to look at this a few weeks ago. It's (in my opinion) a restoration project. The engine sounded rough and the back of the sills was rotten pretty badly, to the extent that if I'd pulled a bit harder, a big section would have come away. It's a shame as its a very genuine car. It also had marks, dings or broken paint on nearly every panel. The sat nav didn't work, suspension looked to be leaning and the door cards had been taken off and badly refitted. The dealer is a nice guy but a typical dealer. As I opened the bonnet, he said "you won't have any trouble with this, these BMW engines are excellent" When I made it clear that I knew what I was talking about, he shut up! He wasn't keen on lowering the price. All in all it needs lots of work to bring it up to scratch.I would value it at little over £400 and it won't pass to next mot with the rotten sills. In reality, it's one big bill off the scrapyard or best as spares.

Thanks I'm glad really it's saved me a long trip only to be dissatisfied with the car when it's supposed to be excellent

I was disappointed as was prepared to do a bit of work but not major surgery. I travelled all the way from chester. I know that everyone's opinions differ but in my experience of rovers, it's a money pit. For nigh in £1000 I would want a reasonablly reliable and presentable runner that may require some running repairs and would have a good few years left in it. This one is not in the category! There was no coolant in the expansion tank either.

Just to digress slightly, I don't seem to see many CDT or CDTI for sale, I wonder how many were made
