I would say that if the OP is uncomfortable on the A38 then I fear he would not be any better on the smaller A roads of this route.

Especially if you know the area.

On another point I did buy a map the other day to keep in the 75, even though IG0 8 on the DD does a good job. One cannnot blindly rely on any GPS every time.
