i have to renew my licence every 5 years now i have to have a medical (£ 150 )

i also have to do driver training 1 course every year (£100)

and the pain of doing it all

costs a fortune

It has been a problem for years I had heard of getting coppers signing the photocopy for you but it's supposed to be on computer so how do they get it wrong and I knew every 10 years or when you hit 50 mind you that could be because I have my Hgv

He had to re-test for his bike licence

Very true, I preserved my group D when I renewed mine a couple of years ago.

I never have sent my licence in, just put it as lost, that way if things go pear-shaped you can suddenly find it in the back of your sock draw, DVLA won't accept a photocopy as proof of entitlement, just to be on the safe side I have even managed to keep my pass forms from when I took my bike test, but I seem to remember a few years ago it was mainly the bike entitlement that got erased of the system, could be paranoid here about trying to get bikes off the road but that's a whole new story.

I'm the same, I've still got the certificates from the theory and the practical, for both my car and my bike license. And I too send off for a replacement and tick it as 'lost'. Normally because it's for a change of address, when things are very easily lost and then found. Costs about £20 I think but I feel safer doing it that way.

However if a bike cop can have to re-sit his test, then I doubt even 'finding' the original license would help.

I still have my paper one, never bothered with a photocard and will resist as long as I possibly can.

Re-newed mine a couple of years ago, the only good thing was, they will remove any "spent" points free of charge!

I was told that the Post Office did this a couple of months back when I decided to have a medical so I could get the PCV (Bus & Coach) entitlement back on my licence.
I went to the Post Office to be told they don't do it anymore.
