Might be tad difficult if no browser working to download Windows Updates?

The OP said the browser worked, but certain websites (i.e. YouTube) complained the browser was too old. The OP will still be able to go to Windows Update v6 with IE6, which will give them most of the updates, and then Microsoft Update (which it installs) will take them the rest of the way (and doesn't use a browser window)

If you can get the ram upgraded, you could run Windows 7? Ram is fairly cheap and easy to install yourself (simply plugs in).

Your laptop specs are here: http://panam.acer.com/acerpanam/note...e1350sp2.shtml

If your feeling adventurous, try running the Ubuntu operating system. http://www.ubuntu.com/

Its what I'm running right now and my older clunker of a laptop is doing pretty well

stat menu>all programs>windows update

then:
scan for updates,
then review and install

Use the scrollbar to review the updates, clicking the Remove button for any that you don’t want to install.

click install now

Default Back with an update and new problems!

Ok, thanks for the advice so far with this old war horse of a laptop.

I managed to aquire a disk labeled "Service pack 3", and installed it. This helped, and I was able to download Google Chrome. I know there are haters of it, but I've used it on several machines that are iffy, and it seems to work better. So far on this, its faultless.

I quite like this little machine, its robust, very quiet in operation, and the screen is good. So I'm keen to see what I can do with it. So can the boffins help with 2 issues?

1. It came with an Ralink wifi thingy, but I often have terrible problems getting online. First I have to enable "WiFi Direct", then select the network. Thats fine, but as soon as I input the wifi password, the Wifi Direct disconnects itself, and it takes many attempts to finally get it to work. Any tips? I've re-installed the driver many times.

2. After about an hour of say watching Youtube, the machine just freezes, and has to be switched off. When re-started, it comes up with an error message about "FAT32" issues, and invalid this and that. Could this be related to the lack of RAM, and where and what kind do I buy?

Sorry for the long post!

To run XP you really want at least 1Gb of RAM. To check what memory to buy in to crucial.com and run their system scan tool. It'll tell you exactly what you have and what the upgrade options are. Their prices are reasonable. As for the WiFi, you might need to update the driver to the latest available. Just google the adapter you are using.

hi,try downloading tuneup 2014--by AVG it cleans up your PC--its free for 14 days I think and cleans out all duplicate files etc--see if that helps speed up and sort your registry and start up programs . Cheers Walter.
