Thanks, it arrived this morning - I managed to make contact with Daz and get an image copy of his setup, which I set up on an SD card, fired up and got something working on screen, with keyboard and mouse. I looked at the settings menu (a country road background), but couldn't find anything about setting a fixed LAN IP, nor accessing the wireless settings. I need wifi and it on a fixed IP. All is very new, very intimidating at the moment. I'm using the kitchen portable TV for HDMI input, the bedroom portable rejected my attempts to use its HDMI - something about mode not supported That HDMI worked fine with a Firestick..

Congrats, sounds like you are getting somewhere. Assuming it's based on the raspbian system then here's a link to a wifi setup guide https://thepihut.com/blogs/raspberry...ry-pi-raspbian - there may be differences due to different versions but should help you get started. Remember 'Google is your friend' has never been truer than then when trying to setup some new (to you) operating system.

I am still very much doing battle with it, but I am getting results slowly. The fixed IP's had to be manually setup in a config file. Yes, it is running Raspbian Stretch. The ready configured software for it, didn't support the WiFi interface, so I ended up setting it all up from scratch. My weather software's usb interface needed mono, but wouldn't work with the latest v4 versions of mono, so I have spent the last two days trying to find a source for the earlier v3 versions. I finally got it connecting to my station yesterday lunch and that at least is working great. My latest problem, is trying to get it to reboot itself and restart the weather software, during the early hours, or run the weather software if there is an interruption of power. I have followed someone else's instructions how to do this in the crontab file, but it seemed not to have worked last night, over night. It had maybe rebooted, but had not loaded the weather software. I had to load it when I got up. It has been frustrating and yet quite enjoyable. Its is quite reminiscent of my early forays into microprocessors in the in 1970's, but 1gb of memory and quad core, is very different to the 1Kb and 4Mhz back then.
