PCV Filter Change 2nd Attempt...Failed
The problem is those pesky star headed bolts that hold the injector wiring loom in place. Went out and bought a 5 mm bi-hex socket, way too big put everything back. Today borrowed a 4mm socket, far too big. Thought about getting them out with pliers or swan necks but was afraid of completely destroying the head. Put everything back together as borrowing next doors garage. Has anyone else had a problem or advise they could share please, oh now the rain has come on. Oh forgot to say this is a 2001 CDT M47R engine.

I changed the PCV filter on my car yesterday, they did stump me at first and I had to do some running about to see if I could get a torx socket. However, in the end, I found a normal small socket did the job without screwing up the head of the bolt, as they were not all too tight. I'm pretty sure it was just a 5mm socket, though you say 4mm was too large

As Chris says, a normal 5mm hex socket worked in a pinch, as long as you're careful.

Yes 4mm is too large, I think later models like yours would have larger heads so a 5mm would do the trick but the ones on mine are very small so I guess a 3mm or 3.5mm may do it but dont have one in my socket set, been having a look around and most sets start at 4mm. Thanks for your advice though, will keep looking.

Early models have very tiny heads, almost half the size of the later ones, in fact the heads are smaller than the shank of the thread.

use small mole grip to get them started or even all the way out if you damage the head re-fit with self tappers, other wise as you say try a 3mm 3.5mm socket Arctic

I did mine last week but being a later model I managed to use a 5mm socket.
Just get some mole grips on it!

I could not agree more. Why struggle. I think my set last year were £9.99 (including postage) from the Bay, but they are in a nice moulded case. Delighted with them. Still a bargain if you only use them once, but you won't! |
