Default Front lower ball joint

I'm in the process of replacing the lower suspension arm as the ball joint failed the MOT.

I've managed to get the nut off the pinch bolt but the bolt itself won't come out. I've put plenty of releasing fluid on it and have tried putting the bolt back on a bit and hitting it with a lump hammer but it just won't shift.

Has anyone got any suggestions that I can try?

I am assuming that once the nut is removed the bolt should just come out. It this correct or is the bolt screwed into a thread in the clamp??

Yep should come out.try putting a cordless impact wrench on it if you have one and whizz it out.probably due to the angle of the clamp holding it in place.

I don't have a cordless impact wrench unfortunately. Also the hex head of the bolt is rounding so I can get anything to grip on it.

Try use a impact socket on the head to prevent rounding it and to get it moving, put the nut back on and start hammering it, it will free up eventually they can just be very stubborn.

As already said, only impact/pneumatic sockets should be used on all running gear nuts n bolts. You will need a new pinch bolt, that is not screwed in, but pushed in. Brute force with a lump hammer, with the nut at the end of the thread. You can heat the pinch with a butane torch and whack it before it starts to heat up the bolt.

Thanks for the responses.

I've been putting the nut loosely on the thread and hitting it with a lump hammer but it just wont shift. unfortunately the head of the bolt is already rounded so I can't get a socket on it. I have Irwin extractor sockets but even they can't get any grip on it.

I've also tried heat but only have a small plumbers gas cylinder type which doesn't seem to get anything hot enough. I was also unsure whether I should be heating the clamp or the bolt??

I had to give up yesterday but I'm hoping that all the releasing fluid I've used will have had some effect overnight.

A member had the same problem. He removed the whole strut and then cut through the bolt and this made it was to remove bolt.

Try heat in hub pinch bolt area,

I'm want to avoid having to take the whole strut out so I think I will persevere with the bolt. I'll have another go with some heat as you suggest as I was aiming the blowtorch on the bolt whereas I probably should have be heating the clamp.

I left it alone today as I was focusing on replacing the rear brake hoses but that didn't go any better!!

Have you tried springing the arms of the clamp apart by tapping a small cold chisel into the gap ? This can change the grip it has on the pinch bolt and also break the corrosion . It is also a useful trick when you come to pull the ball joint pin out
