What a difference a postcode makes!
I am moving home next month to a place only 3.5 miles from where we live now. As my insurance is up for renewal at the end of this month I thought I would have a look on a comparison site, but enter our new address.
The lowest quote that came up was £1100, I checked that I had entered everything correctly. Yes, the best quote was £1100!!!!!. I eventually discovered I could get it for £900 if I have a black box fitted! I have just received an email from my current insurers quoting me £314 for the address we are living at now. I thought the £314 was a bit steep but this £1100 is ridiculous. Unfortunately for me I only have 2 years NCB, despite now being retired and having been a driving instructor and trainer of driving instructors for many years. Also, I have NEVER claimed on my insurance in my life. Why only 2 years? well when I was instructing I always used hire cars, and the NCB wouldn't transfer to my own car. I then became a named driver on my wife's insurance while I just insured my motorbikes, full NCB on bikes! but when I decided to buy my own BMW Z3 a couple of years ago the bikes NCB wouldn't transfer to my car! jeez. So I had to start all over again. So, what caused the massive jump in my insurance? the POST CODE. Moving from a WF postcode to a BD postcode. When I spoke to someone on the phone about it, I was told that the BD (Bradford) post code is classed as a high risk area. I explained that where I am moving to is actually miles out of the city of Bradford and amounts to no more than a village with one road through it. No difference! I have eventually got it down to £639 with Classicline but I have to cut down the yearly mileage to under 5k. Or possible cheaper if I lower the mileage even more. To which I replied "I could get it down to NAUGHTY WORD nothing, if I just sorn it and not drive it at all, so it becomes an garden ornament" So, it would seem that before you move home, check out your insurance first, or you may get shafted!

It all boils down to statistics methinks, an area which has a high amount of claims or such a busy area i.e. motorway access, industrial estates etc. gives them an EXCUSE to raise premiums.... just my opinion......

I feel your pain Mike! Not so bad for me now i moved out of Liverpool but previously had them quoting me stupid amounts. I also have low no claims despite years of bus driving without a crash and full ncb on bikes (if you have a free staff bus pass and a motorbike what need for a car other than the wife's? ). I think they mainly base it on the damage a thief could do and the likelihood of the car being stolen rather than your driving ability.

AND, I ain't finished just yet lol
To make matters worse, we were only moving to help out my mother in law who has just moved into a care home, who is by the way getting shafted herself by having to pay all her own care bills just because she had a few quid put away for her daughter (my wife) to inherit. We decided to rent out our newish (11 year old) three storey, 4 bed house that we have lived in from new and move into the mother in laws newish (11 year old) apartment and pay her rent to help with her care home bill. This, we thought would give my wife and I an extra income of about £250 a month (the difference between the rent of our house and the cost of rent we would be paying on the apartment) It would now seem the this extra cash will be swallowed up by the insurance on both our cars! And the mother in law will be blissfully unaware to all this as she is away with the fairies, bless her. Rant over!

I was told on the phone that it's more to do with fraudulent claims that actual accidents or thefts

It's disgusting how they put an increase on the whole of the BD area when it is split into different sections with the addition of the number after the BD

That's more or less the same scenario that I have at my postcode, I was never able to get insurance cheaper than £600 no matter who I rang, Two insurance companies refused to quote me and most of them were over £1000 despite the fact I've never made a claim in over 45 years of driving once.
The car was never parked anywhere other than in a locked garage every night but it made no difference.

That's Bradford for you, it's crash for cash, uninsured driver and terrible driving central. I read it's the worst in uk for uninsured drivers.
I know of people who refuse to drive into Bradford because of it. |

Those quotes are amazing - I was moaning about my increase, but I think I'll keep shtum.
What infuriates me is the length the companies will go to when they create these reasons for not honouring a claim. |
