What I did with my Rover 75/MG ZT today?

Fixed the powered rear blind.

As far as I can see, the popular opinion here that the motor is unreliable is only true as far as it goes. The motor assembly is unreliable.
Th problem was in the gearbox (well, that and getting the piggin' thing out). Usual clag masquerading as grease that had set in places. I dismantled it, cleaned it and repacked with good old LM grease.

This thing's geared down A LOT. Thus the motor produces very little torque and the slightest obstruction to its rotation stops it doing so. In my case, clag on its brass worm drive gear.

NB: On the end of the gearbox is a torx screw. Tighten this before removing the lid. It locks the main output gear and prevents the massive assist spring going FDOING on opening and spitting the bits everywhere (like it did for me). Then you can clamp a set of lock pliers on the shaft, remove the transfer gear and let the spring down gracefully.

Reassembly means winding up so the shaft flat gets to the two 'o clock position (yes, really, its wound that tight), locking the gear and then wiggling the transfer gear into place before putting the lid on.

I might be having a blond moment, but wouldn't that cause problems with the onboard computer?


When I press the button on the indicator switch of my car, it displays MPG etc, it doesn't switch to sport mode ??

I think the OP as fitted a button indicator to a none IPK which as no computer as yours does.

Hi Chris.
No need it is a normal response if you have the stalk with the IPK reading, i doubt it would work with the IPK one i may be wrong not fully read the thread to be honest.

Hi Steve,

On the how-to thread, I did preface the tech details with “Assuming your car has no Trip button at the end of the indicator stalk, the mod consists of ....” so Arctic is correct - it’s for non-computer cars.

Cam covers off and new Brillo Pads fitted after checking that all was clean and clear. Amazingly clean in there really. Just a small bit of gunge in the gauze on the front bank which looked more like rust than solidified oil (condensation no doubt). You can't beat regular oil changes. Bit of a backache now!

Last Friday (it's Wednesday now), I bit the bullet and started a suspension & steering rebuild on the CDTi. I bought the bits last December when I SORNd the car, and they've sat in the boot in an unopened box since then whilst I built up enough motivation to get it done.

So five part-days (three full days probably) replacing the anti roll bar bushes and drop links, lower control arms and bushes, inner and outer tie rods, dampers, and struts tops & bearings. Cheeky little calipers & pads service (clean/regrease) while I was at it, finished this afternoon, nipped up to the local garage for tracking, and it's perfect. What a difference! Not a rattle, clonk or knock, drives & handles beautifully, and I gave the new remap a proper run on the way back. I think I've fallen in lurv again. (Also discovered a bunch of unused muscles & joints I forgot I had..... )

Fitted a nice updated fan resistor.. I now know why the fan was only working on the high speed intermittently, the old uprated resistor had crumbled apart !! New resistor fitted and hey presto the fan now works properly.. another job done

Just picked her up from a local classic car restorer after having some bodywork done. Rear wheel arch and front wing just above the sill had corrosion bubbles. Front wing section was cut out and a new welded in then painted. I think he's done a fair job for £150

However sods law would predict the offside front ABS sensor gave up on the way home so no speedo and erratic fuel gauge Just another on the to do list for this weekend.
