thank you for the replies

I'm a bit confused and probably about to make a fool of myself.
Do you insert the locking tool into the pulley and then slide a socket through the locking tool onto the bolt?

The Haynes manual does not mention a locking tool.
It suggests removing the starter motor and putting a wide flat bladed screwdriver into the teeth of the flywheel. also makes it sound a simple job

Haynes descriptions on most things - " Undo bolts and withdraw "
Also, " Refitting is a reversal of removal "

Both classic phrases that don't take into account real world " It's been stuck on for 15 years and you're gonna need a gas-axe and a prayer to who-ever you feel fit to get it to come off!

Hi Ian.
Yes the socket goes through the tool which hold the crank pulley in place if you go for this tool below then it would be better used with a tube, or you could wedge it on the sub frame I think, as you will need both hands to lever the socket & bar, also a tube

I have the tool above in my shed but have never used it yet.

I would prefer to use this the proper tool for the job.

always use a new bolt.

rattle guns can cause timing chain trouble so be careful using one of those, thread recently about an engine that would not start after using a rattle gun on the crank pulley.

We have used the tool in the link once . It’s very awkward and Very fiddly, the handle is not angled as the original mg rover tool but it does work . If you manage to source the proper tool then it makes your job easy .

If there was one cheap enough I would get it, just in case.
