Don't believe there is any downsides just a better breathing engine and don't forget to check your pcv filter, the engine management light won't come on after changing.

Just leave the nice clean EGR in place, but don't bother reconnecting the actuator solenoid

This is as effective as fitting an EGR bypass pipe, and cheaper, and looks OEM to the MOT man

Haha, I see your point about the mot Brian, wouldn't want to be messing about with it all again come mot time and if I don't need to spend £25+ on a kit ... happy days.
Got to do the manifold clean now as was looking a bit sad in there too.
After I disconnected the egr wires, the vibes at 1500 and 2500 were very much reduced as you predicted, only a faint vibe if I hold it at both those rpm rates, I take it this is fairly normal?
