Check the wiring plug to the low pressure regulator on top of fuel filter, unplug it clean with contact cleaner and re plug in.

Couple jerry cans of diesel in and it gurgled and sputtered back to life happy days, never read about the fuel gauge lying but lesson learned I won't let the light come on in future, thanks everyone for the suggestions

I must admit that I have never understood why people let the fuel go down until the light comes on. Why?

Skint flint Yorkshire man want every last drop before filling up , only ever ran out of fuel once before bought a Peugeot partner fuel gauge showed 1/4 of a tank but found out on the way home a 1/4 means empty due to a faulty fuel level sender

Yes that’s one good reason, and here’s another good reason, because when you’re changing the brake pipes by the tank you don’t want to drop the tank with a whole load of fuel in it, it’s heavy so run down to the warning light before dropping the tank
