Unhappy Car not starting....any suggestions? Help? High Wycombe area...

Hi all

Frustrated doesn't come close at the moment!!!....

Two weeks ago I put petrol in my diesel car - bad move I know. Called Fuel Fixers and they cleaned it up and it drove fine afterwards.

Took it for it's MOT on Wednesday - failed and had the following work done to get it through:

*. Parking brake efficiency below requirements and no travel;
*. brake pipe excessively corroded rear (x2 either side of fuel tank)
*. anti-roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt front (x2 links);
*. suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement front lower (x2 arms rear bush)

As an aside...on Monday, the car wouldn't start - called the AA who checked the battery and said all was OK - and the car started for them first time!!

So, having got the car back yesterday with a brand new MOT, I was feeling pretty happy (although poor!!). So, imagine how I felt this morning when the car WOULD NOT start again!! I've left it a couple of hours and tried again - sounds healthy enough BUT just doesn't fire up.

I had asked the mechanic to check both fuel pumps and he confirmed that they were working and he'd not had a problem with it not starting.

I'm leaving the car with my daughter who has to rely on it for work and ferrying around her young son.

I really feel this car needs someone who KNOWS about Rovers to take a look at it. It's hard for my daughter to travel off here there and everywhere with her son so I was wondering if there was ANYONE who might be close to the High Wycombe area who would be prepared to come and take a look? Maybe even this weekend as she's fretting about it being reliable for her next week...

PS: Hubby and I live in Spain so I'm not here that frequently. I'm leaving today having THOUGHT I had got the car sorted out for her.

Just tried something I read in another post...

Listened for the pump priming when turning key round (but not trying to start it). Tried this a few times, then went for it. NO GO. :-(

Non-starting diesels are one of the most discussed topics. I'm pretty sure you'll get pointers from the existing threads here: https://cse.google.co.uk/cse?hl=en&c...on%27t%20start

Lots to read

Thanks T-Cut. The AA have just left. Helpful and knowledgeable guy actually. He ran his diagnostics and got the following errors. He had also squirted some Easy Start where you're supposed to somewhere around the injectors and although it didn't start straight away, 5 mins later she fired up perfectly!!

Patrol found the following fault code/s:System : Engine control - 73L / Diesel EDC 15C4 .7680 - CAN messages. Error Message : No message from injection pump.13573 - Glow duration control. Error Message : open circuit.4704 - Prefeed pressure monitor. Error Message : Beloerating pressure.

He said he couldn't be sure that this was the problem, but it indicated that it suggests more of a sensor issue than anything more mechanical perhaps.

Again, we really need someone who knows these engines to help us out. I won't be here and my daughter isn't able to do anything...

Unfortunately those error messages dont help, there is no CAN connection from the injection pump to ecu, so ignore that, Glow relay, ignore that 99.9% of them come up with that error and it doesnt stop the car from starting. Low fuel pressure, well again 95% have that code logged.

You may have a fuel pump on the way out, is the tank over a 1/4 full?

Might be injector leak back , the main thing is you need a mechanic who knows these engines .
As they where shared across Land Rover and bmw you should be able to find a specialist
We my previous cars these issues had been injector leak back
Is the plenum with the Ecu dry also as this might be another cause

Kissy

There is a MG/Rover specialist down the road form you in the Cressex Ind estate (MGRS). I have used them myself, Simon and Rob, they know most things as ex MG/Rover Mechanics.

Problem is they are a business so therefore no discounts or friends rates.
£60 plus VAT are their rates for labour

If you are desperate they are close but as said NOT cheap

best of Luck

Phil-T4 - yes, the tank was over half full.
Unimatrix1066 - yes, plenum is dry.
Topov - yes, they used to be down the road from us and now in Cressex. If I can't find anyone else then perhaps they might have to be the last resort.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions. As ever, now not being with the car, I suspect if it doesn't start again my daughter will just leave it unless I can organise some help for her!!!

If it starts with easy start, get an injector leakback test done, i think that is where the problem lies.... (fingers crossed)...

This car had a full set of Injectors fitted by Lynx Diesels (near Reading) just a few months ago, so highly unlikely this is the cause of the current problem......

My preference would be a failing fuel pump, or possibly a faulty sensor - as ever, the challenge is to correctly identify the culprit as early as possible! :-(
