As above, probably just needs re pressurising. All systems tend to loose pressure over time.

Historically the Baxi has maintained pressure of approx 1.75 but of late the pressure has been dropping to about 0.5 and I have had to increase it to almost 3.0 (by adding more water to the system via a small tap) in order for it to start running again. But the pressure does keep dropping???

A local "engineer" did call to fix it, he replaced a diaphram and when that failed to cure the problem, he now recommends buying a new Worcester boiler at a cost of £1,900 .. ..

..and if the new boiler doesn't fix it, what then ?

You can spend a lot of money blindly replacing parts through flawed guess work.

Try putting a plastic bag over the pressure release valve drain, these sometimes leak when they shouldn't.

You can find small leaks on pipework and valves, by wrapping toilet tissue around - the water will eventually stain the paper if there is a leak.

Rather more involved, but.... Pressurising the system with air instead of water, might make the leak easier to find. Air will escape much faster than water, with more noise and not make a mess if the system is drained first.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Try the shraeder valve on the expansion vessel screw the cap of and touch the needle if water then your diaphragm is burst you can also put a tyre gauge on to check the pressure , the prv will blow off at 3 bar so with you topping up to 3bar as soon as it heats up the water will blow off, as said above put a plastic bag or dish under the blow off discharge pipe outside and see if any water evident that after running the boiler, if not then a leak and you then have to find it

If you are sure there are no leaks on the system to cause the pressure drop, then the expansion vessel has probably become discharged.
This can be repressurised with use of a car foot pump.
If it continues to drop again the bladder in the expansion vessel has failed, and the boiler will require the vessel to be changed.

Erm.... What/where is the expansion vessel?

the bladder ??

Try putting a plastic bag over the pressure release valve drain, ?
Where is this valve? and how do i get to it please?

Sadly I am not a heating engineer, so even if i understood your advice I am not legally entitled to work on some parts of the boiler, certainly if it involves gas... ...

You can work on your boiler bar the gas and flue which are the sticky points in law.

You should have a small 1/2" or 15mm in new money discharge pipe going outside this is usually just below the boiler if fitted on an outside wall and is usually copper and looks like a C bending back against the wall, if you could find this and fit a plastic bag or container below it, this will show if you are losing water through the PRV (pressure relief valve).

Sorry about the rest of the post I had assumed that you were comfortable taking the boiler case off..

If you can do the first part of this it will tell us if any water is being lost out side

The expansion vessel can be anywhere in the system, but modern boilers tend to have them local to or inside the boiler casing. Usually blue, like a small calor gas bottle, copper pipe onto one end with a tyre valve.

The vessel is divided into two halves inside, one side the water, the other air by a rubber diaphram. Idea is to have some pressure on the air side via the valve, so that as the water expands as it heats up, it pushes against the air pressure via the diaphram.

If the air pressure is lost, or the diaphram leaks, as the water heats up and expands - the only way it can expand is via the safety pressure release valve, where it will be blown out. Once lost, the water will then need to be topped up to get the boiler to run again.

Sometimes the pressure release valves just leak anyway, loosing water from the system. A plastic bag over the valves out let will prove you have water loss there, either due to a failed diaphram or the release valve leakage. Look for a pipe going out through a wall, which should be turned to point down, but open at the end. Follow that pipe indoors and there you will find the over pressure release valve.

Silly old Begger James UK. I told you Marina and I would come over yesterday and have a look but you said not to waste a day and it was working at the moment, now I am out of time for the moment.

Pressure loss will stop the boiler working, and it could be as simple as a water leak or it may be the exp vessel requires re charging with air. I will see if I have any "Trusted " contractors in your Area.

Hi Dave. .

Knowing how busy you are, both with work and with helping people sort their cars out, the last thing I am going to do is take up your time on a rare day off innit....

>>>I will see if I have any "Trusted " contractors in your Area. <<<

Now that would be great.. Thank you Dave.

BTW Harry, the pipe that goes outside is about 15 feet off the ground, coz my boiler is upstairs in the bathroom...
