A bang and a burning smell... but no indication of a problem (yet)
This morning, I fired up my 2002 75 2.0 in preparation for going out later, while I cleared snow off my other cars.
About 10 mins running, there was a loud bang from under the bonnet and a burning smell. No change in engine running, no warning lights, nothing (and no signs where it came from, either). I’m guessing that something didn’t like the cold, but...stupid question...where on earth do I start re. identifying what went pop? Very puzzled! check the fan at the front, has the resistor exploded?
Look through the bumper. Gold resistors are known to do this some times. If the resistor is not Gold then perhaps Grey macafee2 Last edited by macafee2; 11th December 2017 at 10:16.. |

It's taken a while, but this is what I've found so far...
It is a gold resistor: Symptoms (if that is indeed what they are): *Occasionally, the fan starts, then a few seconds later, spins down and stops. NB. This isn't when the car is overly hot. *Several times, I have heard what I can only describe as a "chattering" sound from the front of the car - is this what is meant by the fan "pulsing"? *I followed the guide listed elsewhere on here (re. testing a pulsing fan) - mine didn't seem to follow the same pattern when I went through the steps. |

To put it mildly, that doesn't look right! Looks as if the end of the resistor has blown out and there doesn't seem to be any insulation on the wire

as stevestrat says, that's not right.
I'm well pleased with myself for getting the correct diagnosis. These are more fiddly than hard to change macafee2 |

Jules, a trader on here, supplies them, I trust his before an unknown Ebay supplier. https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=68336 By the look of the photo I think you'll need some cable as well.
