With a cold engine, remove the coolant tank cap, start the engine, then place your hand over the coolant tank for about 10 seconds and check if any pressure accumulated when you lift your hand. If there is pressure in the coolant tank when both engine and coolant are cold it means that gases from the cylinders enter the cooling system through a failed hg. If not, the thermostat might be blocked and the water doesn't circulate through the long circuit and doesn't reach the radiator. To test this start the engine, wait for the temperature to rise then put your hand on the radiator and check if its hot. Watch out for the cooling fan as it may start any time. If the radiator is cold but the coolant gauge is up it means that coolant doesn't reach the radiator and you should replace the thermostat. If the radiator is hot it means that coolant isn't circulated through the system fast enough inicating a failed water pump.
Thanks for that!..will try these tips before taking it in!.just don't want them doing the hg unless it's a dead cert it's that!..Thanks alot.

Did this overheating problem start just after this work was done?

I'm thinking it all sounds like another Double Thermostat situation.
Have you any paperwork to tell you what thermostat was fitted?
A 2004 model will likely have a PRT (Pressure Relief Thermostat), which you really must check out. If so, there will be a plastic T-Piece in the top hose from the head to the upper radiator inlet. The downpipe from the T-piece goes to the PRT, which sits in pipework near the bottom of the radiator. It's out of sight and sometimes out of mind.

See diagram here: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID001582

Unfortunately some garages have never heard of a PRT and fit the standard type in the upper housing (which should be left empty). So, when the engine overheats for no apparent reason, the 'pump and thermostat fitted' comment should always rings alarm bells.

That's a good question.

Two things come to mind Sheran:
  1. Have you checked, using the "demist test", that the fan does run at slow speed? It's highly unusual for a garage to source a resistor and solder it in place reliably.
  2. It's likely that your cooling system wasn't bled properly with the consequent risk of an air lock which can cause symptoms mistaken for head gasket failure.
