Default Mpg

My ZT 190 has been returning poorer and poorer MPG of late. It was down to about 25mpg over a tank using brim to brim for calculating.

I decided to throw caution to the wind and chucked £6 at a bottle of injector cleaner a few weeks ago.

My use is very constant. I drive around 35 miles a day x 2 with pretty much the whole time averaging about 40mph according to Google Maps. I drive through a couple of villages, a lot of 60mph and a short stretch of motorway. In the morning, I get about .5 miles from work and sit in a queue for around 5 mins.

The MPG has been improving steadily over the last few tanks with the last one being 29.5mpg which I think is pretty good going. I managed 380 miles before I had to fill up this morning.

Has anyone else had any experience like this?

Default V6 mpg

I keep a careful check on my mpg using brim to brim calculations and I get a consistent 29 mpg on my ZT 180 auto. I admit to making few concessions to economical driving (I enjoy the performance too much!) but my daily journey is mostly motorway cruising when the mpg is definitely at it's best. If I am doing more pottering around town the mpg drops quite a bit. Given the size of engine and weight of the car, I don't think you can complain at these figures.

Worth checking the air filter. A lot get left a lot longer than is advisable and this can dramatically effect how your engine performs. I had a Focus owner recently with the same complaint, I pulled out the air filter to find it was almost black. The owner was surprised and told me he was sure it was replaced on the last service or at least he was invoiced for it.

Brim to Brim! Surely all that extra weight in the tank will affect mpg?

And I thought I was doing fine at 26mpg mind you I’m only tottering about locally.
My first longest run in the Zircon will be to Gretna next month.

There’s a lot goes into getting better mpg including driving style effective brakes ie not sticking, proper tyre pressures and overall weight, you would be surprised just how much unnecessary weight that’s carried around in the car.

I had a run to and back to Edinburgh last December, sticking at about 3K rpm so about 65 mph measuring brim to brim I got just shy of 32 mpg in my 190.

Avoid supermarket fuels and get 'em serviced regularly by a garage who's office isn't a pickup truck with the engine running.

Personally I'm a great advocate of 6,000 mile oil changes. Quality oil changed regularly is the best mechanic you can have.

Edit: If you want to use a fuel cleaner, RedEx is the only one worth bothering with, and it is best mixed with a half full or quarter full fuel tank.

I have used Redex since I came out of nappies. Both in m/ cycles and cars. Tried one or two others but always went back to Redex.I had my car on the T4 at the nano meet at Four Ashes two months ago, and at 98000 miles, they are still working ok .Got to be down to Regular servicing and Redex, or luck?

Yes Redex for me too, I’ve just put my second bottle into the Zircon this morning and perhaps it’s this nice warm weather but I’m now up 28 mpg so happy with that.
I’ve used supermarket fuel for the last 20 years on my cars and never had a problem but I agree on the regular servicing ie oil changes.

You probably never has any problems with supermarket fuels because you are a user of RedEx.
