20 MPH zones - doncha just love 'em?
Howdy all. Croydon has recently become a 20mph zone. All of it. How hard is it to keep to 20mph in a 180 sports auto..? There are few 30mph zones left.
I am learning the meaning of restraint. Shame no-one else is....

The road I live on recently changed to 20 mph and does anyone take any notice?.............. Nope.
I'm all for safety, but it does feel awfully slow.

Some of Oxford did this a few years ago, you end up driving around in 3rd gear. How good is that for the environment?
When they first introduced it they were Police softly enforcing it by telling you were braking the law but as it was new the would let you off. |

If it stops a toddler getting killed in a school zone... I am for it...

With you on that Pete, they should put a few speed cameras outside schools, instead of in 'revenue grabbing' areas.

It’d certainly make more sense. Never see a camera van on a bad bend but they place one at the end of an overtaking lane, so the point is ? I’ll leave it at that

I live in a twenty zone, and have done for around two years. Do drivers keep to around 20 mph? You bet they do..............not. We have a school for young children in the road. 30/40/50/60 oh yes. The problem is, the police have told us that they will not prosecute under 30 mph. Late last year, the local councillor, myself and two pcso’s, carried out a ‘Speedwatch ‘ action in our road. With four people standing out like a sore thumb, most slowed down to around 25mph. Utter waste of my and the councillors time. Even more interesting was a comment made to me by one of the pcso’s was’ did you see that woman just drive past with a dog on her lap’? I replied ‘did you get her number’? Eerrr no. Was the reply. No interest in the job whatsoever. To much paperwork I suppose. The comment with regards to ‘ how do you keep to 20mph’. All I will say is, if you do not know, then you should not be driving.

It's been 20mph pretty much all around here for years now, we get police on motorbikes who tuck their bikes out of the way, stick their camera on a tripod & then stand by their bike catching & prosecuting anyone & everyone they can.
If this is about safety, why hide? They're out when It's dark to & saw one around 8:00pm on one evening...I'd call that keen. We also get the camera van with the wannabe Police in. I am all for 20mph limits around schools, hospitals & known hazardous areas but the joke here is that there is a toddlers nursery on one of the busy roads here & the speed limit doesn't drop from 30mph to 20mph until way past it! It's nothing but a cash cow & nothing will change my view on that I'm afraid. I'm sure I read somewhere that there have been more fatalities in 20mph limits/zones since they changed from 30mph. As far as I'm concerned, if powers that be are going to bleat on about road safety, they should address the state of the surface we have to drive on. So, I'm not only constantly looking at my speedo to stick to the speed limit, I'm also having to dodge & weave around potholes & deep cracks in the road & if I hit a pothole, it could potentially damage my cars & van which will cost me anyway.
